They went the distance and got the job done!

The Rush 11G and Leahi ‘11G Premier soccer teams played all 100 minutes with no goals scored, but Rush 11G got the 1-0 victory in a shootout at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Sunday!

Rush 11 goalkeeper Lily Cox was the team’s savior when she delivered the game winning block in penalty kicks for the Easter Sunday win!

“I’ve worked pretty hard to get here,” said Cox happily. “I was so scared, but we mostly had them once those first two scares, I was like, ‘Okay, we got this!’”

Despite the high energy from both teams, nobody scored in both overtime periods.

Through five penalty kicks, both teams tied, and that’s when Cox had her moment.

Hue felt Leahi could have won, and one possible goal got away in the latter stages.

“When Lena [Ho-Lucas] got the ball from Mady [Kakehi], she unfortunately got taken out, but I think if Lena was on the breakaway, we would have scored, 100%” Hue said. “If we had a little bit more fight towards the end, we could have got a goal.”

In the first half, both teams played very competitively through the first 40 minutes. Both teams’ goalkeepers made incredible saves at both ends of the field.

After 40 minutes, the score remained at 0-0.

The second half saw more back-and-forth action from both teams. Both teams had good looks on some kicks, but after another 40 minutes, nobody still scored.

There was a scare in the 84th minute when Leahi’s Kiley-Ann Hue, a 4.0 student at Pearl City High School, got hit in the eye, but she later returned in the 95th minute, which was a win in itself for Hue.
