Covering sports with youth.
Soon you will be seeing some of our local youth covering our local games. Heleloa Media is going to be launching the Heleloa Broadcasting Program (HBP). In 2026, we will be done with our initial training and start having monthly maybe even weekly games where youth are filming and commenting on games.
Do you know a kid who knows sports inside and out, but doesn’t want to play? Do you know a kid who loves to record life more than experience it? Do you know a kid who loves to talk sports and knows the gossip on who is who? Do you know a kid who is great with electronics and love working with audio, video and drones?These are the kids HBP is looking for and more.
HBP has the vision of teaching our local youth broadcasting skills that they can use long term to become paid professionals in the sports broadcasting industry. While it is everyone’s dream to go pro playing sports, many don’t know you can go pro covering sports as well. Photography, videography, writing, broadcasting, engineering and so many other professions are vital and essential to sports. We can give our local kids a head start at working in and understanding of the industry.
HBP will launch its first covered game at the MLK tournament in 2026. We will then map out doing a monthly game and broadcasting it on our app so Hawaiians can watch local sports eve if they are not on the islands. Soccer, volleyball and more wil be broadcast in hopes of inspiring kids to want to be in sports broadcasting and providing different types of experience for our kids in the program.
Coach B and Heleloa staff have a vision of pioneering a program to teach youth some of the ins and outs of sports broadcasting. We also wanted to find a way to bring local sports to those Hawaiians who may no longer be local. The combination of our app and our broadcasting team will give us the opportunity to achieve both of the goals within our vision.
HBP will be partnering up with local business to meet the financial needs of our program. At the MLK tournament, we will be flying in industry professionals to work with the kids 1 on 1 and give them real time feedback while working their first games. We will have professionals at each key position so kids can ask questions of the same people who work NBA, NHL, MLS and NFL games.
Heleloa Broadcasting Program will bring a new opportunity for local kids to express their passion for sport. HBP will prepare our members to be paid professionals and gain opportunities within the sports broadcasting industry. HBP will be the first program of its type and we look to pioneer a way for youth to become involved in the multibillion dolare sports boradcasting industry.
