What do most people hope for when their kids play sports? Yes, everyone hopes their kid goes pro, but realistically, most parents hope their child can get a college education. less than 1% of college athlete become professional athletes, but their opportunity to earn a degree and now with NIL money can also earn some money while in college, i have outlined some basic steps and ways to get your kid to the next level.

Your child in their sport of choice needs to be at a competitive level, whether it’s school teams, clubs, or national competitions. Coaches want athletes who have demonstrated skill and success. They need to be recognized as a top performer in your specific sport. Many scholarships are awarded to athletes who are highly skilled in one sport rather than being a general athlete.

Your child’s grades and the curriculum they have taken are important as well. Most sports scholarships require you to meet certain academic standards. Make sure to keep a good GPA and pass any standardized tests that might be required by the school or scholarship program. Focus on time management to balance both sports and academics. Many schools have hat have higher academic requirements do not always compete at a high level in sports, so your child may be the best athlete at a more academically focused school

Your child may want to make a resume that Includes championships, awards, and any recognition they’ve received in your sport. Make sure you include information like their age, height, weight, position, and sports statistics can be helpful.

Be proactive in expressing your interest in joining their team and mention the specific scholarship opportunities they may offer. Overall, it takes a ton of time, dedication, sweat and tears to get to college. It is all worth it when you get the 4 year degree of your choice and have a career you can focus on after sports. Not every kid will play college sports, but if you prepare your child academically and athletically they have a better opportunity of getting there.
